Just came across this thread. Good work! I have just read a great book called Zone Mind, Zone Body by Roy Palmer. I have previously read Csikszentmihalyi’s work on Flow and find it fascinating. Palmer's book is aimed at sports people but I found the explanations about what is happening in the zone/flow very enlightening. Another benefit is there are a number of practical techniques to try that would help anyone, not just athletes.

[...] Tobias Buckell posted this link in his blog a few weeks ago, and it struck a chord with me. Yes, it’s aimed at computer/software programmers, but the concentration difficulties are very similar. I’ve tried the “work for X amount of time, take a designated break, get back to work” method before, but it almost always falls apart after a few cycles because as I’m taking a break, I get distracted by something (ooh, shiny!) and it ends up being two hours before I remember I ought to have been working. What can I say? I’m blond, and not afraid to admit it. [...]

[...] I work very hard to stay in the zone. It’s worth mastering; the zone is where we all do our best work and derive great satisfaction. Focused, flowing, executing your world…cranking those widgets. Whether at work, home, or at play you can’t stay in the zone long if your world is in disarray. [...]
